Fyne studios is the brainchild of two Scottish artists, Don McNeil and his wife, Jean Bell when Don took early retirement from teaching in 1995. Their studios and gallery of their own work is in Newton, an idyllic village on the shores of Loch Fyne. Their studionhas gained in reputation not only in Cowal but throughout the UK with many visitors commenting that it has been the highlight of their holiday in Cowal.
Meet the artists
Their set up is the only one of its kind in Cowal where the visitor experiences an in depth discussion about how their paintings are created. To many it is not only the first time they have visited an artist’s studio but it is also the first time they have spoken to artists and quite often leave excitedly clutching a painting as reminder of the experience. Their paintings express the emotional aspects of the wild and rugged Scottish landscape and not a topographical copy that a camera can do better. Jean has developed a unique series which she calls her ‘Toffee Paintings’ while Don is exploring a series called ‘Synchronicity’.
